The public beta for Invokers Tournament starts today, October 8, for PS4 PS Plus users, with the final game due to kick off in November on Sony's trio of platforms. The title follows a free-to-play but not pay-to-win model, by which you can use in-game gold to buy new rings and weapons, or alternatively pay with real money for fancy skins or even a subscription fee which grants you access to shops discounts or priority matchmaking. Transformation is only allowed once your rage meter has been filled, so you have to keep attacking other enemies all the time (and that's what these games are all about, right?!). The main feature of the game is that you can upgrade your standard invoker into one of a couple of superior versions, by using the left/right magic rings mapped to the D-pad. Regarding the artwork, Invokers Tournament combines different things such as monsters, wizards, mechs, warriors and even 'super-cute' cheerleaders. Arenas are easy to read, with simple bases, towers to destroy and positions to hold, and controls are designed with the PS control scheme in mind. Thus, games are 3v3 and last about 15-25 minutes. This is a more straight-forward and light-hearted take on the genre, aiming at accessibility and short waiting times. We paid a visit to the studio this Monday and had the chance to play some games. Invokers Tournament, by the Seville-based studio StormBasic Games (Ecolibrium), is the first proper attempt from Sony to move into the MOBA space.
